Why is Leather Sustainable?
Lately, the focus on sustainability allowed many alternative materials to
emerge in the market.
At the same time, mass-produced and loosely-regulated leathers goods manufactured everywhere in the world contributed to affect the image of leather overall.
It is not the material itself, but rather the way it is manufactured that should be questioned.
Truth is, Italian leather IS sustainable.
A by-product from the meat industry, Italian leather is unique in the world for its recognised sustainable approach based on transparency and strict compliance with the most stringent regulation on safety, quality, responsibility towards consumers,
traceability and animal welfare.
According to UNIC – the most important association for tanning companies - Italy’s tanning segment is achieving remarkable results for the last 18 years in the
purification of tanning waste.
The industry sets a clear example of circular economy: as of now, 74.4% of the waste produces, will be reutilised in the same process.
Unlike most vegan leather alternatives, lasting for one season and produced with synthetic materials that very often contain PU (polyurethanes) or PVC (polyvinyl chloride), leather products are not only plastic-free, but also durable and organic.
